TRACKING AND PLANNING YOUR FOOD; 5 benefits of food tracking

  1. Accountability
  2. Flexibility to enjoy your favorite foods
  3. Awareness around what and how much you are eating
  4. Patterns emerge
  5. Success with weight management

Accountability:

Just like with exercise knowing someone is watching and waiting on what you are doing will inherently help you to make better choices. Showing someone what you have tracked will also lead you to stop and think about what you eat since you know you will have to talk about it later on.

Flexibility:

Writing down your food means you are not locked into any super restrictive diet. No food is “not allowed” . You eat it, you write it down. No drama. Eating those treats in moderation is normal and expected. Plan the treats, track them and enjoy!

Awareness:

When we track our food, we are forced to stop and think about what we are eating and how much.  We become more mindful about food and may even start to enjoy it more.

Patterns:

We can see how much nutrients we are getting in our diet and where we might be able to adjust. Patterns such as night time snacking or not getting enough vegetables may start to emerge.  Digestive issues can be further investigated by knowing what food we are consuming.  A coach is a great way to help us see these patterns and improve upon them.

Weight Management:

It has been shown over and over again that those who track their food will have more long term success with weight management then those who don’t. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/02/190228154839.htm

How should we track our food?

Choose the way that is the easiest and most manageable for you.  You could choose a physical journal or use an app on your phone to input digitally what you are eating at each meal and snack.  Some apps are simply picture based; that could be fun for the visual people out there!

One helpful tool when choosing to track your food is to plan some of your meals and snacks.  This will take the guesswork out when going to the grocery store. When you plan your meals ahead of time (and pre track) , it will also help you to make healthier choices throughout the day.
